the last filament bulb of street poles of the condominium started to fail. it's the last orange light we have. rest is all cold LEDs. i guess no one cares about that. police and thieves is a simple game: we split the group into 2. we mostly balanced older people against younger people so we kinda had a rank. like choosing the big Lucas (i was the small Lucas) didn't allowed the group to pick Arthur on the next pick, if he wasn't picked already. more or less it was a fair play for both sides and sometimes we balanced by parsing one person to the opposite team depending on the day. the police has to count 3 minutes. the other goes hide. after that the police has 30 minutes to find and caught everyone. ~ 1 kilometer of streets, 56 yards. stuff didn't allowed: jumping walls between streets (houses don't have a wall on the front yard but they have on the sideways/backyards). sad to know basically all Brazilian houses that aren't inside condominium walls needs a fence/wall on the front too. by finding a thief, you had to grab them. then you could trust them into going into jail or most of the times: took them into jail. the jail was in the last street, which had a playground, sport court and a grass field (where the police waits before the start). if a thief, uncaught, managed to get there, they could touch jailed thieves and liberate them. the meta game always obligated a police to stay in jail checking if thieves would just flee without respecting rules or to prevent someone from saving them. entering inside the houses or past the garage was prohibited. sometimes we cheated by entering in cars, sometimes invading houses of families who were traveling. there was various strategies to win. trying a luck episode of hiding in very obvious and close to the start places then waiting the police to head out into other streets could open the doors into the jail street, thus a hide in places mostly never looked after. the rule of jumping walls was prohibited but never followed. there was discussions if some police found out. despite the win or lose, teams always swapped between thieves and police. rarely we managed to had people from birthdays parties to play. these were the most exciting days. lots of people playing. we knew every hide and every possibility. like entering by crawling some very dense bushes/trees and climbing them from the inside (usually leaving a permanent tunnel among the tiny branches revolved by the almost wall-like thick leaves). shade spots that if lied down with a black shirt and pants one probably would go unnoticed and thus free to movement to already looked spots or the jail street to be the hidden angel or the caos when we shouted as thieves the minutes remaining. the most epic tries were to move hidden between yards and save your whole team. spots no one thought they could be climbed, distractions by a sacrificial thieve so others in easy to spot places go unnoticed

there was an old group which by entering society's legal adulthood (18 y/o) age was mostly split into their ways (just like ours did when we grew up). but that day they were throwing a party and they decided to play with us. it was one of the most intense days of that game. older people who were fast. hot girls (tell me which straight boy doesn't like to do stuff with pretty girls). our strategic knowledge dominating the match despite the disadvantages. my core memory was when i sat in the middle of the street with an old thief girl from the condominium. i can't recall what we talked but i recall when she said she missed her childhood and that was probably the last day she would play that game. we were exactly under the last filament bulb we have. everyone was sweating. even the grownups. i think i'll never forget that day. it was warm. we played exactly till 00:30, hour we could negotiate with people complaining about the noise. that girl once cycled around the streets some years ago. she never did that. some days after she moved away. she got married. i think that was probably the last police and thieves we played seriously. i loved that game. for me we would play it across all the summer school breaks but the boys preferred to play soccer during the light time (police and thieves was a night exclusive game). i hated it. much more when they made me the goalkeeper. my favorite role was in the defensive line. i could just throw by body against the attackers and try to kick the ball away and talk to the goalkeeper
